The Bar Council is the professional body for barristers in England and Wales. Mr Bergin was called to the Bar in 1995 and is a non-practising barrister.

We are obliged by the Bar Council to notify you that whilst
Gerard Bergin holds the degree of barrister, he does not have
a practising certificate, because he does not comply with the
Bar Councilís rules for practising barristers. This limits the
work he is allowed to do and the rights you will have against
him and the Bar Council. He cannot appear in court on your
behalf or conduct litigation work for you. This limitation
does not extend to Adjudication or Arbitration.

He is also not fully regulated by the Bar Council, which
means that, although the Bar Council can consider a complaint
against him, it cannot require them to pay you compensation for
inadequate professional services. The Bar Council will also not
pay you compensation itself for any wrongdoing on his part. Full
